The infantry at the beginning are soldiers of the 1st Battalion, The Lancashire Fusiliers. Having fixed bayonets they move into position prior to the attack on Beaumont-Hamel 1 July. The men resting in the lane are two companies and a Stokes Mortar team from 1st Battalion, the Lancashire Fusiliers forming up for the assault in a sunken lane opposite Hawthorn Ridge. Twenty minutes after this film was shot they attacked under heavy machine gun fire and only 50 of them reached the low bank beyond the lane. Thanks.
